Hey Max, first off, congratulations after a stunning victoryat Cage Rage 24, tell us how you are feeling now.
Thank you very much, I am so happy and excited to have fought on a great show, I want to fight more and show people and Cage Rage UK what I am capable of.
Were you always looking to hit those take-downs from the start or did you plan on standing to start with?
No it wasn’t part of my plan, I didn’t know what his game plan was and when he came out and we touched gloves he was already in my face before I knew it so I had to go for the take down.
Your takedowns looked sharp and precise. The first one you hit, Murray must have been a clear two feet off the deck before you slammed him down. Do you have a wrestling background?
No I don’t have a wrestling back ground, but I train hard and my team makes me work harder than most.
What would you say is your biggest motivation to fight and what bought you to the Cage Rage UK show?
Motivation is being on the undercard of such a huge event with fighters like Jimi Manuwa & Michael Pastou, I want to be on TV.
It is the biggest and best show in the UK and I would love to fight soon and eventually get a title shot in the future.
Given your debut with Cage Rage UK was succesfull, who would you like to fight next and when will you be looking to make that fight happen?
I am looking forward to fighting again, I am hoping to get on the Cage Rage UK 26 card in February next year.
Although your time in the Cage is fairly limited, given all three of your fights have been won in the first round, what areas are you most looking to improve upon?
I look to improve on all areas, I don’t want to lack on anything.
You dealt out some major damage to Murray with some insanely accurate your ground and pound. Were you aware of just how badly hurt he was and do you have any idea about his condition?
No I didn’t, all I know was I hit him HARD! I am comfortable where ever the fight goes, I was in guard and I was punching him in the head, I didn’t know how bad he was hurt and when I saw the opportunity to take the choke I did, then when it got stopped I noticed. I really hope that Grants OK and I wish him a speedy recovery.
Damn son... He done got f*cked up!
We can't wait to see you back in the Cage Rage UK cage Max and it's been a pleasure talking with you. Is there anyone you'd like to give a shout out to?
Thanks goes out to Nick Osipczak at New Wave Academy, everyone who has helped me prepare for this fight, my friends and family and of course Dave O’Donnell and the Cage Rage UK team.TweetTagged :
Both you and Jimi have been out of pro MMA action the cage for the better part of a year. During this time though, you have produced a lot of video blogs and have been featured in many publications regarding your training and your Sports Science ties. It seems a lot of people we have spoken to are more familiar with you than Jimi at this point. Does this put any extra pressure on your shoulders going into this fight?
I fought recently at UK1 in Portsmouth so I have not been out of action as such. Pressure, I welcome. It motivates me.
Although the UK1 Light Heavyweight champion, both of your pro MMA fights have ended with arm-trianges. How strong would you say your ground game is compared to Jimi's and do you have any apprehension about going to the ground in this fight?
I have a record of 4-0, with 2 wins by arm triangle, one by ground and pound and the last being a choke. I do not compare myself to Jimi or anyone else for that matter, I just work hard to improve in every area as much as I can so that I am prepared for all eventualities.
You've worked closely with the experts on Harley Street and have been able to see statistics and measurements that arguably no-one else in the world has access to. Do you think such a scientific and in-depth look at your body and how it performs gives you an advantage over Jimi?
The work I am doing with the guys at Harley Street is simply amazing. It is a unique resource that I am very fortunate to have, however they have told me that although I have made massive gains, their work is only just beginning and not to expect to realize full potential for at least another year. As for advantages over Jimi I’m not sure that I have many, I'm just going to get in there and do my best.
Straight up, who is the better striker? You or Jimi?
I guess we will find out Saturday night!
Jimi has stated that he will destroy you this coming weekend. How do you respond to such a sure fire statement?
We will see about that, I know one thing for certain I don’t give a damn what he says or thinks when we get in there its on and he will get no respect from me. The better man will win on the night, simple.
What would capturing that UCMMA title mean to you and your team?
It would be the most amazing achievement for us all. I have only been training for 20-months and to even get a shot was great but to win, well that's the dream really.
What do you think about Jimi's decision to turn down a UFC contract? Would you have done the same?
I would NEVER turn down a fight in the UFC I would love nothing more than to get a shot at the UFC my ultimate life’s ambition. Dana if you’re reading come and get I will come to fight and bring and army of fans with me. Let’s get it on!!!
We have seen that you are working hard to get your new gym open after some issues with landlord's and such, can you give us and our readers some information about how your gym differs from the rest and how can people get involved?

Imagine this, our beloved Bas Rutten is coming out of retirement for one last fight. It's a landmark occasion and through some cosmic circumstances, you get to pick his opponent... Who do you pick?
Me! It would be an awesome experience to fight Bas, as long as he agreed to take me for a few personal lessons after and taught me a few tricks.
Awesome. You are only the second person ever to want to take on Bas in his final fight but we love it. Thanks a lot for speaking to us, best of luck tonight and finally is there anyone you'd like to thank or give a shout out to?
Hello! Here we are again, getting the low-down before you enter the battle field on Saturday night to take on Stephen Stanley at Cage Rage UK 24. How are you feeling with only two days to go?
I'm feeling great! My training camp has gone really well at Bandogs MMA.
You had a fight a couple of weeks back, tell us about that.
I fought on a show called Rise Of The Fallen for Killacam promotions. I was fighting a guy called Valmyr Neto. He is a bjj black-belt so a lot of people didn't want to fight him. They approached me and I was very excited about the opportunity to test myself against someone who is a specialist at what he does! As the fight panned out it was very clear that he didn't want to stand with me. As soon as the fight started he went for the take-down, eventually managed and won via armbar.
What were your thoughts after the loss? Did you just want to get straight back in the gym?
I was not that disappointed with the loss because of the level of his ground game. He was very respectful to me also, which made it a bit easier to take. But yeah, I was very eager to get back to winning ways. I was straight back in the gym two days after the fight and full-time training, ready for any phone calls I could receive.
You've taken this fight on relatively short notice, do you know much about your opponent?
I know my opponent is a BJJ blue-belt and also had a fair bit of success in Taekwondo, getting a few gold medals, but mainly I know he's a man and human, so I have no fears going into this fight. I know my own ability so I don't fear what anyone else can do.
What can we expect to see from you on Saturday night? A birdie tells me you've been working on some new submission techniques?
I've been working all aspects of my game but there are a lot of new submissions that I've added. There's stuff that people have not seen before, so if it goes to the ground I wont be to fussed and I'm sure everyone will see a move that they will be talking about for a very long time!
As the reigning UK1 champion, when can we expect to see you defend that title?
I'm always ready to defend the belt but I would love for something that's never been done before. If Cage Rage UK could set this up it would be great. A lot of people know I want to fight Cory Tait so why not put both titles on the line and winner of that fight will walk out of that cage with the UK1 and MMA belt around their waist.
Whats your prediction for the Chapman Vs Manuwa fight?
To be honest I can only see this fight ending one way. I think Manuwa will be leaving that cage with the belt. Chapman is a great fighter but I think he needs a bit more experience under his belt. This is MMA though, so there could be a upset on the cards.
We've heard rumors that a few organisations have contacted you recently, can you tell us anything more?
Yeah, it's true. I've had a few offers from organisations about signing me to fight but at the moment I have this fight with Cage Rage UK to think about. Afterwards, I'll be sitting down with my management and discussing fights on other shows, possibly abroad.
Yeah! All of us at Bandogs MMA are very supportive of Hands Up Guns Down. We will all be there on 29th October making the fundraiser a success and hopefully we can get the amount of donations we are after so that Hands Up Guns Down will be known as a recognised charity.
Is there anyone you'd like to thank?
Yeah, I would like to thank everyone involved with Bandogs MMA, sparring partners, coaches, my management. Also, I'd would like to thank all sponsors and WWBRD for the interview!

After a simple, innocent question was asked, an infatuation was started. It's a question we've considered for a long time and now its your chance to do just the same. With the latest news, reviews and opinions you can now ask yourself; What Would Bas Rutten Do?
If you have a query, a problem, a suggestion or merely want to tell us how much you love Bas too, then please drop us a line at
As much as it pains us, we are in no way affiliated with Bas Rutten. We've mentioned him on twitter once or twice but he doesn't know us and we don't know him. Well, we know a lot about him, but not on a personal level. Please don't confuse this issue or take what we say out of context. We just love Bas, MMA and all the shenanigans that go along with it.
